Being in charge can be a lonely existence – the buck stops with you! So, who do you turn to when you want to talk about those sensitive issues in your business?
There are some things that bosses cannot discuss with their staff. Although you may love your spouse/partner dearly, more often than not, they are not the right person to talk to.
How it used to be
In the past bankers claimed to be able to offer such a service, but even if you are fortunate to have a ‘proper’ bank manager, often they cannot provide the advice and experience you are looking for. They’ve opted for the security of working for a large organisation and no real life understanding of what’s it’s like to run a small business. In modern times, less businesses have a close relationship with their Accountants and even less with their Solicitors.
Again, as with the bankers, often they don’t have the familiarity with the challenges and obstacles faced by SME’s. If it’s general, straightforward simple advice you’re after, then there’s plenty of this online. However, it’s not the answer for more complicated issues where the advisor needs to understand the culture of the person/business seeking the advice.
Been there, seen it, done it.
I have no doubt that one of the most valuable services I offer my clients is the opportunity to talk about the issues that trouble them. These people need a sounding board and a confidential ear they know they can trust, which is owned by a person who might have seen the problem before, whose owner has at least some understanding of the sheer difficulty of making some decisions and who can be relied on not to retell the tail. I can’t promise to always provide the answers. Sometimes the job is to listen. Often, if an issue is discussed then the answers and the path to take to resolve the issues become clear. I am also fortunate to have a superb network of people that can be called on for confidential advice if needed.
If you feel I might be able to help you, please contact me. And don’t forget, our first meeting is free and on a no obligation basis!
